Finnish postal service provider Posti has significantly increased use of new IoT-technology in its parcel lockers and uses Connected Finland’s IoT locks. The locks are bringing multiple benefits for Posti and its customers.

Smart lock enables parcel lockers to be connected to the internet very cost efficiently, without any other device, fixed data connection, or external power supply. The battery-powered locks use Sigfox IoT network for data transfer. Already tens of thousands of locks have been deployed nation widely within the last 12 months.

Parcel lockers are bringing Posti’s delivery services closer to the customers: packages can be picked up at the most appropriate time and place for the customer. Parcel locker network is expanding to individual shops and shopping malls as well as into office and residential buildings. The services are coming towards people and not the other way around. As announced recently, Posti is aiming to increase the amount of lockers to 4000 by the end of year 2022.

The lock was developed in a 18-month project by Posti and Connected Finland’s subsidiary Connected Inventions. In addition to the locks, Connected Finland provides the internet connectivity for the locks with the help of its nationwide Sigfox-network. The network is a part of global Sigfox ecosystem operating in 65 countries.

“During the product development project, we were convinced about Connected Finland’s abilities to implement this challenging and extensive turnkey project. Our processes will become more efficient and quality control easier, and supplier services will improve even further”, says Jari Paasikivi from Posti.

“This has been a unique journey with an innovative partner. Together with Posti we have been able to develop and fully utilize the new cost efficient IoT technology. For consumers the service will become easier and safer to use, so the IoT locks will benefit both Posti and also its customers”, comments Marko Vanninen from Connected Finland.
